Frederic Chopin’s Polonaise in C sharp minor opens with a power blow preceding the tender theme. It was composed in 1836 alongside Polonaise in E-flat minor also found in Op. 26. This polonaise presents mysterious, loving, and menacing characters. The characteristics found in Op. 26 No. 1 are those found in late polonaises such as motives of tremendous weight.
Like many of Chopin’s works for piano, many different interpretations can be found. For example, Listitsa’s first theme in this Polonaise is dignified and sentimental. Richters interpretation of this theme seems to be filled with more warmth and at times one may sense some despair. Although both performances encapsulate Chopin’s melancholic message, the colors and characters reflect in very different approaches. The different episodes of this piece effectively portray moments of hope and anxiety.
Because of the Polish aspect of this work, there are many traits that remain true to its native land such as dramatic rhythms. The seamless melodies by Chopin are full of elaboration and rubato. This piece is a fine example of Chopin’s compositional style and the recordings below show the freedom of interpretation he allows.
