In 1834, at the age of 22, Liszt wrote three Apparitions. The three movements are inspired by the French poet Alphonse Marie Louside de Lamartine’s “Apparition” and are all quite different from one another. These three pieces are very expressive of what must have been some strong feelings that Liszt was experiencing. Throughout the piece, Liszt gives many directions on how to perform and convey particular feelings.
Apparition No. 1 is marked Senza lentezza quasi allegretto and has a flexible rhythmic element to the piece. This movement has an improvisational quality and the melody is supported by a churning tremolo-like accompaniment. Filled with different sensations, the spiritual side of this piece would greatly influence one's interpretation. The pacing of this piece is somewhere between contemplation and joy and is full of serene musical moments and moments of silence that are just as important.
This piece is valuable when learning how to express a personal language through music. It was beautiful to try and discover what sacred undertones Liszt incorporated in his first apparition. I couldn't imagine composing something like this at the age of 22! I love how composers and artists and poets were all so aware of what others doing. I know the arts are still connected today, but it seems like the connection is not as deep as it used to be.
